# 1 Virginia Melvina Parkins in Illinois in the fall after the Civil War. After her death in 1902 in Calvin, Oklahoma he moved to Pine Grove, Hood River, Oregon. He married Lydia Blackwelder in Hood River.

He had served in Co. F 38th Illinois Infantry along with his younger brother Joel D. Wells. When in the Battle of Stones River in Tennessee Joel was killed. George buried him under a cedar tree on the battlefield.

Comrade George M. Wells was born in Jo Daviess county, Ill., Aug. 29, 1838; went with his parents to Logan county, Ill., and lived there until 24 years of age.
At the beginning of the Civil war he entered Company H, 7th Illinois infantry, serving three yea, then was honorably discharged on June 21, 1865, at Nashville, Tenn., by reason of the close of the war.
On February 27, 1862, he was married to Miss Virginia M. Perkins, there being born to this union 11 children, of whom six are living: Mrs. Ida Bivens, Mrs. Elizabeth Fowler, Mrs. Ella Steward, of Stuart, Okla; Mrs. Clara E. Raibourn, of Haleyville, Okla., Mrs. J. S. Lester and A. E. Wells, both of Hood River. He leaves 28 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
In 1871 they moved from Illinois to Kansas. After living there one year they moved to Missouri, and after staying there a short time drifted south into Texas, on account of his wife's health. After living in Texas ten years they went to Oklahoma.
On March 15, 1902, he lost his wife at Calvin, Okla., and in Nov. 1902 he moved from Calvin to Colfax, Wash., spending the winter with his daughter, Mrs. J. S. Lester. In May, 1903, he came to Hood River, where he has lived till death came Friday morning, Dec. 19, 1913, at 9:25 a.m. He was 75 years, three months and 19 days old.
January 19, 1905, he married Mrs. Lyda Blackwelder at Hood River, who is left to mourn his death.
