In Michael Dan Jones's book 'Major General Franklin Gardner: Hero of the Siege of Port Hudson' he writes:
'The Gardners had four children, who all tragically died at early ages.......The second child, Charles Kitchell Gardner, was born about 1854 in Cincinnati, Ohio and named for his paternal grandfather. His father's military record notes he was on recruiting duty at that time, which probably accounts for the place of birth being given as Cincinnati, in the 1860 Census. The child died sometime before 1870.'
