In Michael Dan Jones's book 'Major General Franklin Gardner: Hero of the Siege of Port Hudson' he writes:
'The Gardners had four children, who all tragically died at early ages. Their first child, Alexandre Franklin Gardner, was born May 22, 1851 in Vermilionville, Louisiana. He apparently died sometime before the 1860 census.'
In later years, Vermilionville became Lafayette, Louisiana.
