Veteran, 92, Taken by Death
War Aid to Sherman and Early Oakland Policeman is Dead

MARTINEZ, Aug 24-George H. Wright, 92, one time copyist for General Sherman and Thomas during the Civil War, died yesterday afternoon at his Vine Hill home after an illness of only three days.
Death terminated his 68 year marriage to Annie Williamson Wright, whom he married at Elkhart, Ind., in 1869. She is 6 years his junior.
Wright was the last survivor of his regiment, the 11th Michigan Infantry, and the last charter member of Lyon Post, G.A.R., of Oakland, which brought about the foundation of the Veterans' Home near Napa in the eighties.
Moving West in 1873, when Indian troubles in the Middlewest thwarted his effort to establish a prairie farm, he settled in Oakland and became one of the early-day Oakland police officers, serving for 10 years.
In the Civil War, Wright served in the 16th Army Corps under General Joseph Hooker, and because of his excellent penmanship, was transferred to the staff of General Thomas as a copying clerk.
Besides the widow, Wright is survived by two sons, Albert and Merrill Wright of Martinez, and a daughter, Mrs. Minnie Kirkman of Los Angeles. Another daughter and son, Mrs. Lillie Icard of Baguio, Phillippine Islands and George O. Wright of Oakland, died several years ago.
He was a native of Kalamazoo, Michigan, and was born March 7, 1845.
