James A. Barnes was born October 1, 1869, on the old homestead farm then owned by his father [James Alexander Barnes 1830-1910], where he spent his boyhood days. Arriving at his majority he spent several years in the West trying to regain his health, thinking that a change to the mountain regions might improve it. Failing in this he returned to his old home in Illinois. He consulted several specialists, but with no apparent results. As a last resort he was taken to the hospital in Kankakee, where he remained until his death, March 27, 1920, aged 50 years, 7 months and 26 days.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, two brothers and a sister. He leaves to mourn his death one sister, Mrs. Ella Ashmore, and two brothers, John H. of Norfolk, Nebr.; and Charles S. of Gibson City, besides other relatives and friends.

He was always considerate of others, a dutiful son and a loving brother.

Funeral services were held from the home of C. S. Barnes, in charge of Rev. J. R. Kesterson, on Wednesday, March 31 at 1:30 o'clock. Internment in the Blackford Cemetery.
