Leo immigrated to Canada as a WW2 veteran with only a few dollars, a mechanics licence and speaking limited "Finnglish." A new girlfriend, Kaija Hohter, (Kay) and a job at the City of Sudbury as a mechanic brought him to Sudbury. Soon after, Kay and Leo were married and they moved to the uninhabited Lake Nepahwin where they raised their family. Leo became a supervisor of the Mechanic Shop at the City of Sudbury, until he retired at age 65.
Leo possessed legendary strength and was an excellent track athlete, boxer and provincial seniors' bowling champion. He often embarrassed high-school athletes - friends of his children -who wanted to challenge his strength in arm wrestling. He also had a great sense of dry humour and a wit that revealed his significant intellect and ingenuity. There was almost nothing he couldn't engineer, build, or repair.
Leo never re-married, but in the past 10 years developed a warm and trusted relationship with Helen, a resident of Finlandia. The family are grateful for the wonderful leadership, care givers, kitchen, and medical staff at Finlandia Village. We know Pappa was loved and gently cared for at Finlandia. A private service will occur as per Pappa's wishes. Donations in Leo's name to the Finlandia Village Sisu Foundation Board, would be greatly appreciated. We honour the life and legacy of our Pappa. Kiitos to a life, well lived. Kippis!
