5822 Private A Holdaway, 2nd Battalion The Buffs (East Kent Regiment). The battalion deployed to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War, sailing on the Gaika on 22 Dec 1899, and arrived at the Cape on 13 Jan 1900. Along with the 2nd Gloucesters, 1st West Riding-Regiment, and 1st Oxford Light Infantry, they formed part of the 13th Brigade under Major General C E Knox. In Feb 1900 they deployed to the Modder River for the advance to Bloemfontein and Pretoria. On 13 Feb 1900 they started at dawn, marching to Waterval Drift on the Riet River. On 14 Feb 1900 they marched to Wegdrai Drift, and again the same evening, starting at five o'clock, they marched to Klip Drift on the Modder River. On the 16th Cronje's column was sighted, attacked, and harassed. They then fought in the battle of Paardeberg 18-27 Feb 1900 (10 killed), at Poplars Grove on 7 Mar 1900 and at Driefontein on 10 Mar 1900 (21 killed; 72 wounded). They marched into Bloemfontein on 13 Mar 1900. Private Holdaway died of disease at Bloemfontein on 28 Jun 1900. He is also commemorated on the Royal East Kent Imperial Yeomanry and The Buffs Boer War Memorial in Dane John Park, Canterbury, Kent, England (see: https://www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk/memorial/107532).
