Buried in the graveyard at the present day New York Avenue School in Somers Point, New Jersey. Burial Ground of Col Richard Somers 1737 - 1794 and his immediate family. He was a grandson of John Somers 1693. He was a member of the 3rd Regiment Gloucester County militia Monument errected 1850 in memory of his son Master Commandant Richard Somers USN 1778 to 1804. Site restored 1981 Somers Board of Education. Marker presented by Somers Point Rotary Club.

Located on the Public School Grounds
"Col. Richard, d. Oct 22, 1794, in 57th year."Son of Richard Somers (1693-1760) and Judith Letart. He was the 6th of 10 children born to the couple. He married Sophia Stillwell in 1761. He was left a great deal of land around Somers Point, New Jersey by his father, including: "all the land and marsh that lies adjoining to James Steelman's land" which was over 400 acres and one half of his father's ownership of Peck's Beach (later known as Ocean City, New Jersey). (One of his children, the Master Commandant Richard Somers USN (1778-1804) died heroically at Tripoli in 1804 (See Find A Grave Memorial 73309051)
