Richard Somers, the son of the founder of Somers Point John Somers, was born in March 1693. He grew up at on the Jersey shore when it was a beautiful landscape of ocean to the west and woods to hunt in to the east. He was the one who "burnt the brick and built the house now standing on Somers Point." He married Judith Letart, a French Canadian who was said to be very wealthy. They had six sons and four daughters. Their sons were: John; Richard; James; Francis; Edmond and Joseph. The last two boys (Edmond and Joseph), along with four women were later lost at sea in the same vessel. Richard died November 27, 1760. His wife Judith died three years later on August 26, 1763. Richard's legacy, along with his children and their descendants, will always be "Somers Mansion".
