Princeton - Hovey Ira Harley Hedges, Jr., 86, of Oakland City, Indiana went to be with the Lord Saturday, June 4, 2022 at River Oaks Health Assisted Living. He was born May 8, 1936 to his parents, the late, Hovey and Nancy L (Fisher) Hedges.

After graduating from Winslow High School in 1955, Hovey went on to graduate from the Indiana College of Mortuary Science in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Eventually his formal education as a mortician gave way to his true passion as an entrepreneur. In 1964, Hovey founded what is known today as Good Samaritan Nursing Home. What began as a three-story home containing 12 beds, has grown to encompass a full city block prior his retirement.

During his tenure with Good Samaritan, Hovey was appointed by President Gerald Ford to represent the United States in Russia, Africa, and Italy as President of the Nursing Home Association of America.

Inclusive to founding Good Samaritan, Hovey also owned Lamb-Hedges Funeral Home, known now as Lamb-Basham Memorial Chapel, and Johnson's Restaurant, which was located on the lot currently occupied by Denny's. Hovey truly exemplified what it means to be a Good Samaritan. He was passionate about the town he called home (Oakland City, IN) and spent his professional career growing local businesses to give back to the community. Hovey loved his family dearly and cherished the relationships he had with classmates, friends, and business partners throughout the years.

Hovey is preceded in death by his brothers, Russel Hedges, Sylvester Hedges, and Bethel Hedges; a sister, Goldie (Olfield) Hedges; daughter, Patti Lynn Haggard; and grandson Nicholas Doan.

Hovey is survived by a wife, Patricia (Lockhart) Hedges; daughters, Melody (Charles) Sandefur and Julie Hedges; grandsons, Zach Comer, Jed Comer, Ryan Sandefur, Remington Price, and Dalton Haggard.

Service will take place at 12 P.M. (CST) Saturday, June 11, 2022 at Lamb-Basham Memorial Chapel in Oakland City, Indiana. Burial will follow at Montgomery Cemetery in Oakland City, Indiana. Visitation is from 10 A.M. until 12 P.M. (CST) Saturday, June 11, 2022 at Lamb-Basham Memorial Chapel. Published in Courier Press on June 6, 2022.
