I propose now to give a short sketch of James Smith's family of six children, four sons and two daughters, who grew to manhood and womanhood. Andrew, the oldest was born in Ballybogan, County Donnegal, Ireland, in October 1808 and came to America with his family in 1822. They came first to Philadelphia, and then moved to Mifflin County, then to Bellefonte in Centre County, and in 1826 to the Beechwoods in Jefferson County. After his mother's death in 1831, he went to A1legheny County, Maryland, and worked with his uncle, William Smith who was keeper of a furnace there for about two years. He then went back to the Beechwoods and went to work again with his father on the farm. January 29, 1835 he was married to Jane McIntosh. To them were born eight children, three sons and five daughters. Their names were Eleanor A., Robert A., James G., Mary, Matthew H., Sarah Ann, Margaret, Jane and Elizabeth. All are living at the time of the writing this sketch except Eleanor, the eldest, who died, January 29th, 1905. Andrew obtained the old homestead, the southern half of the first purchase of three hundred acres, residing there on until his death. In 1860 he was elected to the office of county commissioner, serving a term of three years. He afterwards served nearly a year in the same office, being appointed to fill a vacancy. He died March 9th 1882, in the 74th year of his age. His wife died August 22nd 1894. Both were members of the Beechwoods Presbyterian church and were buried in the Beechwoods cemetery.
