SMITH, JOHN

Washington, Beech Tree P.O., is a farmer and was born in Centre Co. on May -- 1823 and was a son of James and Eleanor (Carney) Smith, pioneers of Washington Co. John Smith settled on the farm which he now occupies in 1844, and which he has cleared and improved himself. He was married in Nov. 1845 to Nancy Hunter. They have a family of 5 children: James A., Jane E., John B., Andrew W., and Matthew W. Nancy was a daughter of John and *Jame (Jane? See below - Brown) Hunter of Washington Twp.

John, the fourth son, was born in Bellefonte, Centre County in May of 1823, and came to Beechwoods with his parents in 1827. There he worked on the farm and attended school until he grew to manhood, when a farm was purchased which he began to improve. In 1845 he was married to Nancy Hunter. To them were born six children, Jane, James Alexander, E1izabeth J, John Brown and Andrew Moore, and Matthew William. John Brown and Andrew Moore are twins. All are living when we write this sketch except for, Jane who died in childhood and James Alexander, who died October l5th 1900, aged 51 years. John lived in such a way as to gain a good name, which is better than great riches. He was a member of Grove Summit Methodist Church and died September 1st, 1890, in the 66th year of his age. Nancy, his wife was also a member of the Grove Summit Methodist Church. She died February 15th, 1904. Both are buried in the Beechwoods Cemetery.
