Josephine Timberlake Nicholson, known by all as "Miss Jo" departed this life on Monday, January 14, 2008, after a brief illness, surrounded by family and clergy. Visitation will be today from 4:00 to 6:00 pm and on Thursday, January 17, 2008, at 10:00 am at St. Andrew's Episcopal Cathedral. Funeral services will be Thursday at 11:00 am at the Cathedral. Interment will be in St. Andrew's Columbarium. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Mark Seepe Funeral Directors.

Miss Jo was born on January 20, 1920. She grew up at Twin Oaks Plantation in Lowndes County, MS. She attended the Crawford public schools and then went to Judson College in Marion, AL for two years. She then transferred to Millsaps College, where she was an avid debater and earned her BA in History. She was a member of the Chi Omega fraternity and later was the sponsor of the Chi O chapter for over 15 years.

After college she taught for one year at Webb Swan Lake consolidated school. She then married her husband of 62 years, John Nicholson, who predeceased her by three years. They had a wonderful life together and traveled extensively in Europe and Asia. They spent much time at their beloved home "Timberlake" on the Tennessee River.
Miss Jo is fondly remembered by two generations of Jacksonians who attended her nursery school, the Briar Patch, which she founded and operated for 29 years. She had an innate love of children which was recognized and reciprocated.

St. Andrew's Cathedral was Miss Jo's church home for 63 years and she was involved in all aspects of church life. She was head of the young children's Sunday school for 32 years and served on the Altar Guild. The Miss Jo Library was established in her honor upon her retirement.
Miss Jo was involved in community activities and received the Goodwill Volunteer Award for her work with patients at the Blair Batson Hospital. She served on the board of St. Mark's School and was a docent at the Old Capitol Museum. She belonged to the High Noon Club, Pleiades, Gallery guild, and Monday Club.

She was predeceased by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles R. Timberlake, and her husband John.

She is survived by her daughter, Dorsey Nicholson Wade and husband, John; sister, Bettye Timberlake Nicholson and husband, Ed; grandchildren, Susan Gear Deason and husband, David, Hap Wade and wife, Mary Ellen, Gordon Wade and wife, Dasha, and Kate McNeel and husband, Pleas; nieces, Betsy Nicholson Nation and husband, Bill, and Martha Nicholson Lewis and husband, Elliott; and by nephew, Edward Nicholson and wife, Margaret. Miss Jo had eleven great grandchildren.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Sienna at St. Catherine's Village for their loving care these last few months and also the Odyssey hospice. We are especially grateful for Miss Jo's special friends, Katherine Johnson and Matella Manning, who were very dear to her.

Memorials may be made to the St. Andrew's Episcopal Church Nicholson Fund, to the Miss Jo Library at the Cathedral, or to the Endowment fund of St. Andrew's school.
