Erma Smith, 95, of Marshalltown, formerly of Grinnell, died on Saturday, April 30, 2022, at Grandview Heights in Marshalltown.

Funeral service at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell. Interment in Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. Memorials may be designated to the Grinnell Friends Church or to Dollars for Scholars.

Erma Jean Duncan was born the daughter of Cecil and Sophia (Hursey) Duncan on August 12, 1926, in Lineville, Iowa. She was raised and educated in Grinnell and Montezuma respectively and graduated from Montezuma High School in 1944.

Erma married Harold Smith on January 23, 1946, in Montezuma. They were the parents of five children, Roger, Pamela, Connie, Randy, and Jackie. The couple farmed near Ladora and Melbourne until 1950, when they moved to Grinnell.

While living in Grinnell, Erma was an insurance clerk for Goodwin, Hamor, McConnell and Voss Insurance Agency. In 1971 Harold took a job with Martin-Marietta and they moved to Denver, Colorado. Erma was employed as an accounting clerk at GEICO Insurance and at Howard Electric in Denver.

In 1985 they moved back to Iowa and enjoyed their retirement years at Holiday Lake near Brooklyn. They moved back to Grinnell in 1994. Erma was a member of the First Baptist Church in Grinnell and joined the Grinnell Friends Church in 2000. She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge and the Red Hat Club. She enjoyed traveling, collecting owls, and miniature state spoons, going to Meskwaki Casino, and most importantly, being with her beloved family.

Surviving are two sons, Roger (Jan) Smith of Marshalltown, Iowa, and Randy (Marcia Winningham) Smith of Kellogg, Iowa; two daughters, Connie Bailey of Phoenix, Arizona, and Jackie Smith of Phoenix, Arizona; 13 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; her brother, Gerald Duncan of Grinnell; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harold Smith; daughter, Pamela Guthridge; siblings, Howard Duncan, Evan Duncan, Rollie Douglas, Maxine Davis, and Deloris Walter; and her half-sister, Alice Penelton.
