On Saturday afternoon, Mrs. J. A. Jones, wife of Hon. J. A. Jones, clerk of the United States Circuit Court, invited Mrs. M. J. Stadden, Mrs. J. M. Adair, and Mrs. N. J. Turney to go with her to the woods west of the city to gather flowers and ferns. They accepted the invitation and, accompanied by Della, an eight-year-old daughter of Mr. Stadden, drove to the woods, and spent a pleasant afternoon, little Della being the happiest of the party. Having gathered a large number of flowers and ferns the party started to return home abut five o'clock, and when turning into Monroe street, at its western terminus, the horses cramped the carriage, overturning it, and throwing all the occupants to the ground. Little Della fell heavily upon her head and chest on the hard ground and it was at once perceived that she was seriously injured. She was taken to the residence of Mrs. Jane Roberts, near by, and Mrs. Adair made her way to the State House as speedily as possible, and notified her husband of the accident. Dr. J. L. Million was at once summoned by the Captain, and went as speedily as possible to the scene, but only to find the little one dead, she having lived but a few minutes. Dr. Million found no bruises upon her but that her death was caused by the rupture of a blood vessel near the heart.
The remains were taken to the residence of her mother, from whence the funeral will take place this afternoon. The affliction to Mrs. Stadden (who is the widow of Hon. Wm. Stadden, so long connected with the Auditor's office) is a most severe one, and she will have the deepest sympathy of not only the numerous friends of herself and deceased husband, but of many who had met and learned to love the bright and charming little one.
