John Connelly, Esq., an old and well known citizen of Springfield, died at his residence yesterday morning, after a protracted illness. Mr. Connelly was born in Georgetown, D. C., in 1818, and at the time of his death was in the 61st year of his age. He passed through this city in 1837, en route for Franklin, Mo., where he engaged in agricultural pursuits, which he continued for eight years. He then went to Nauvoo, where he remained a short time, and then removed to this city, where he resided continuously up to the time of his death. He was a carpenter and builder by trade, and if we mistake not, assisted in the work of building the old state house - now the court house. He was a strong democrat, an active local politician, and on several occasions was elected to city and town offices. He leaves a wife and grown children.
The funeral will take place this afternoon at the family residence, corner of First and Reynolds streets.
Illinois State Register, Springfield, IL, 1 Mar 1879
