6095 Private A MacRae (or McRae), 1st Battalion the (Duke of Albany's Ross-shire Buffs) Seaforth Highlanders. Attached to the 2nd Battalion during the Second Anglo Boer War. The 2nd Battalion deployed to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War, sailing on the Mongolian about 21 Oct 1899, and arrived at the Cape about 16 Nov 1899. Along with the 2nd Black Watch, 1st Highland Light Infantry, and 1st Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, they formed the 3rd or Highland Brigade under Major General Wauchope and were part of the Kimberley relief force under Lord Methuen. They joined their brigade on the Modder River. They fought at the Battle of Magersfontein on 11 Dec 1899. They were part of the advance to Bloemfontein and Pretoria, fighting at the battle of Paardeberg on 18 Feb 1900. In Feb 1901 the battalion deployed to Victoria West to counter Boer activity in the Western Cape Colony. In the summer of 1901 the battalion furnished two companies as part of the infantry of a column working in the Eastern Transvaal under Major General Beatson and General Bindon Blood. Private MacRae was wounded in action and died of his wounds at Goedehoek, Transvaal. He is also commemorated on the Seaforth Highlanders Boer War memorial in the High Street, Dingwall, Scotland (see: https://www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk/memorial/161267/).
