She was born November 23, 1884, a daughter of Jackson and Ellen Armstrong Leaverton, in the White's Grove Community of rural Monica and spent her entire life within a few miles of that area. The last 56 years were on the Mendell farm near Princeville.
December 25, 1906, she was married to Arthur E. Mendell who preceded her in death in 1961.
She was a faithful member of the White's Grove Baptist Church until it was disbanded following the destruction of the church building in a tornado in 1961. She then transferred her interest to both the Monica Methodist Church and Sunday School and the women's activities of the Princeville Presbyterian church. She was a member of the Princeville Daytime Home Extension unit for many years.
She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Mildred Moody of Phoenix, Ariz., Mrs. Viola Frazier of Peoria, and Mrs. Roscoe (Florence) Anderson of Oxnard, Calif., one son, Wilbur, and a daughter-in-law, Letha, of Princeville, 14 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, three sisters, Mrs. Mabel LaMay and Mrs. Elvira Leaverton of Monica, and Mrs. Earl (Rhoda) Cobb of Toulon, and several nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by one great-grandson, one sister, Ruth Beall of Glendale, Ariz., and her brother, Joseph Leaverton, July 20th of this year.
Her daughter, Mildred, has faithfully cared for her mother throughout the past year as her health failed and has been with her constantly during her last months in the hospital.
Funeral services will be in the chapel Saturday at 2 p.m. with Rev. Robert Spencer officiating. Burial will be in the Princeville Cemetery.
