She later left Russia after it became too dangerous and went to the Ukraine where she got caught up in the Russian invasion. She was killed along with a civilian while on assignment in a bombing during the 2022 Russian Invasion of Ukraine while filming the site of a Russian rocket strike on a shopping center in Kyiv, Ukraine. She was the fifth journalist to be killed during the war. Her final assignment post read, "10th day of the war. I have no words of encouragement for all of us other than these," she then showed a photo of a poster at a bus stop in Russia showing the death mask of the dictator Joseph Stalin.
