There is ample evidence that Annie Oakley's great-great grandparents were Jacob and Eleanor Buzzard Rooth. Their daughter (Annie's great grandmother), Amelia (Emily) Clapper (Annie's grandmother), married Jacob Wise. They became the parents of *Susan Wise (Annie's grandmother) who married Jacob Mosey Moses. Susan, Jacob and Eleanor Buzzard's descendant, is Annie Oakley¹s mother.
Amelia Clapper was born, the daughter of Elenor and Jacob. She had one daughter with Jacob Wise in 1830. She died in 1840 in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania.

I have permission to change Jacob Wise's death date to 1844 per Karen Besecker, the research specialist at Garst Museum which secures and shows Annie Oakley's documents and artifacts. "You may add on findagrave.com that you spoke with Karen Besecker, research specialist at Garst Museum, who informed you that the estate of John Wise, father of Jacob, names Susan, Rachel, Jacob, Jr., and Mary Jane as heirs of his son, Jacob Wise, and that since Mary Jane Wise was born in Nov 1844, Jacob Wise had to have lived until 1844." Jane Riggs Curci April 6, 2022

The National Annie Oakley Center at Garst Museum is in Greenville, OH, an exhibition of her life and history. You may be surprised as you discover Annie's true personality. Unlike Hollywood's image of a wild west, rough-and-tumble tomboy, Annie was a petite woman who loved lace, silver, beautiful furnishings and elegant clothing and was blessed with physical athleticism.
Garst Museum is a large historical museum with over 300,000 artifacts on display in over 35,000 square feet of exhibit space within six building wings. Major exhibits are The National Annie Oakley Center, Crossroads of Destiny, American Indians, Lowell Thomas, the Village, agricultural and military exhibits.

Find A Grave has changed their rules on married last names for women who have been married more than once. All the married last names can now be listed in the last name space. These married last names no longer have to be on the gravestone. Her memorial is to come up when using any of her married last names when searching for her memorial. We are making the suggestion that Susanna "Susan" Wise Shaw's name on her memorial be changed to Susanna "Susan" Wise Mosey Shaw. This is a nice change for the descendants of Susan and Jacob Mosey or anyone else that has ancestors in the same situation. Thank you.

Since posting the following message online in 1999, I have learned that Susanna Wise Mosey Brumbaugh Shaw FAG # 6595914 1830-1908 is my 1st cousin 3x removed through Ancestry.com's DNA testing, while Phoebe AKA ANNIE OAKLEY Moses FAG 774 is 2nd cousin 2x removed through Ancestry.com's DNA testing. I also followed up my conversation with Howard Ayers and called Ms. Engle who confirmed what she had told Mr. Ayers.

CLAPPER, JACOB/ANNIE OAKLEY LEGEND

In 1995, I had a conversation with a gentleman named Howard Ayers who researched the Clapper connection to Annie Oakley. Here is an edited version of his story as it appeared in the Blair County Genealogical Society, Inc. Newsletter dated Sept-Oct-Nov 1995 Altoona, PA Volume 16 No. 3

The following statement in a book entitled, Annie Oakley and Buffalo Bills's Wild West by Isabelle Sayers:

"Her (Annie) parents Jacob and Susan Moses-------------. Family tradition tells us how a mature Jacob fell in love with a 15-year old Susan Wise and, after obtaining permission from her parents, took her away on a horse. After their marriage in Blair County, Pennsylvania, in 1850, they became the parents of Mary Jane, Lyda, and Elizabeth. The Moses' kept a small inn near the termination of the eastern division of the Pennsylvania Canal at Hollidaysburg. One night, after a careless guest upset an oil lamp, the log tavern burned to the ground and the family was homeless. The year was 1855. Jacob had heard so much about the fertile Ohio country that he decided to move West. Mr. and Mrs. Moses settled on a small rented farm and five more children were born. After Sarah Ellen came Phoebe Anne (Annie) on August 13, 1860, and later John and Hulda."

There is now ample evidence that Annie Oakley's great-grandmother Amelia (Emily) Clapper married Jacob Wise. Jacob and Emily were the parents of Susan Wise who became Annie Oakley's mother.

There must be hundreds, or even thousands, of people who lived in Blair County who can claim relationship to the small girl (five feet tall) with a gun that could not miss. Some surnames of these people are Ayers, Jones, Hall, Fornwalt, Wise, Butterbaugh, Markey, Geesey, Walls, Arthurs, Kirshner, Glasgow, Estright, and Cummings. Then of course there are many more in other branches of the Wise/Moses family.

Mr. Ayers reported that he spoke to *Marie Leighty Engle, the author of 'The Clappers In America.' This book which was printed in 1980 is 585 pages long. Originally the author concluded that the Annie Oakley legend that she was a member of the Clapper family was a case of mistaken identity and that one could not correctly assume that Annie was a member of the Clapper family. He later spoke to Marie Engle and discussed the lineage. In 1993 she wrote to Mr. Ayers and said that, since publishing her book, she had continued to hear from many people regarding the Clappers and that she now believed that the Annie Oakley story is true and wished that she had these acquisitions at the time she wrote the book
