Rev. Edward Daves Lee, 90, of Shelby, died on Monday, August 7, 2023 at his home.

Born in Cleveland County, on September 21, 1932, he was a son of the late Edward Yates Lee and Evelyn Daves Lee. He was a 1954 graduate of Appalachian Teachers College now known as Appalachian State University, where he played on the basketball team. Edward graduated with degrees in Mathematics and Physical Education. He would go on to teach at Polkville High School where he also coached the men and women's basketball teams, until he left education to work for Cleveland Mills in Lawndale.

It was at First United Methodist Church of Lawndale where he was called into the ministry. Rev. Lee would graduate from Emory University with his Masters in Divinity in 1966. He began his ministry while in school at Emory serving the Murphy Circuit. He would go on to serve the Rockwood & Beaver Dam Charge, Canton; First United Methodist Church, Taylorsville; Concord & Sharon Charge, Lewisville; First United Methodist Church & Stony Knoll, Dobson; Trinity United Methodist Church, Winston Salem; First United Methodist Church, Spruce Pine; Oakview United Methodist Church, High Point, and finally retiring from First United Methodist Church, Dallas. After his retirement, Rev. Lee would continue to serve the Western North Carolina United Methodist Conference in various ministerial positions as needed in the local area.

Edward had several different interests in life including attending theater plays, playing canasta with friends, picking his guitar, and listening to his favorite country artists especially Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash.

After retirement, he and his wife purchased the Daves family homeplace built in 1918, which they worked to restore during their retirement. This same homeplace is where Edward was born into this world, and where he peacefully left this world.

In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his loving wife of 49 years, Vera Mae Baldwin Lee; a son, Michael Edward Lee; and two brothers, Bill and Ted Lee.

He is survived by two daughters, Teresa Lee Olsen and husband Kenneth of Shelby and Susan Shelby Lee Morgan and husband Scott of Greenville,SC; a brother, Dale Lee and wife, Jan of Raleigh; a sister, Lynn Lee-Eldridge and husband Kevin of Cary; three grandchildren, Laura Olsen Guraedy and husband Jason; Jessica Morgan Shephard and husband Wade; and Kirby Elizabeth Morgan; and two great-grandchildren, Bruce William Shephard and Alice Mae Shephard. Also surviving are many beloved nieces and nephews.

Edward is also survived by a very special and long time friend, Honorii Wells, with whom he enjoyed love, company and companionship with for many years.

The family would also like to recognize two other very special long term friends from his days in Seminary School; Loy Kennedy and Larry Powell.

The family will receive friends on Friday from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm at Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Shelby, NC.

The funeral service will be held on Friday, August 11, 2023 at 2:00 pm at Aldersgate United Methodist Church with the Rev. Randy Blanton, Rev. Carrie Carpenter and Rev David Lee officiating.

The burial will follow the service in the Cleveland Memorial Park in Boiling Springs.
