Hon. David Olmsted b. 5 May 1822 Fairfax, Franklin, VT was the son of Timothy Olmsted (1767-1845) and Eunice Page Ufford (1779-1865) both buried in Franklin Co., VT.

David set out at age 16 with his older brother Phineas Page Olmsted (1819-63) to Mineral Pt., WI to mine lead and then became a successful trader with the Winnebago Indians in Minnesota. They called him "the Good Man" as he and his brother were the only white men in the area at the time of 1840. In 1853 he gave up trade and bought the Minnesota Democrat newspaper and became Mayor in the first municipal election in St. Paul in 1854.

His ill health, from lead mining, caused him to go back home to St. Albans where he died at age 37. Olmsted County in Minnesota was named for him.

He married Parma West Stevens (1833-79) on 30 Sep 1851 in Bell Prairie, MN.
