Brother Emmanuel Alicino, SDB, died on February 9, 2006, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern, NY. He was 88 years old.
He had been a member of the Salesians of Don Bosco 64 years. Brother Alicino was in the Bronx on December 5, 1917. He entered the Salesian seminary (Don Bosco College), in Newton, NJ, in 1940 and made his profession of vows on September 8, 1941. He was known affectionately as Brother Al all his years as a Salesian.
For much of his life Brother Al was attached to the treasurer's office of one Salesian work or another, doing the simple but essential tasks of helping people with business at the office, making deliveries and purchases, or delivering messages. He did so in Newton (1941-45, 1959-60, 1979-91), Suffern, (1945-47), Haverstraw (1947-55, 1965-79), East Boston (1955-56, 196365), Ipswich, Mass. (195659), and Orange, NJ (1991-92). From 1960 to 1963, Brother Al assisted the director of Salesian Missions at New Rochelle with fund-raising activities. Brother Al's ready smile and good humor won him and the Salesians many friends. He also developed an avocation in Civil War history; one question would unleash from him a detailed record of a particular episode or entire campaign. From 1992 to 2001 he was on the parish staff at St. Anthony Church, Paterson, NJ St. Anthony's pastor, Fr. James Curran, SDB, said of him:
Without fanfare he performed many valuable services in an unobtrusive manner. Faithfully, he unlocked and locked the doors of the church every day. As sacristan he prepared the altars for the celebration of Holy Mass, and he was a part of the English-speaking prayer group and faithfully cared for the weekly collection. He did all those 'little things' that mostly go unnoticed but are very important in a parish. He was also a very pious man, and when he wasn't involved in his duties, you would find him praying the Rosary.
In 2001 Brother Al retired to the Marian Shrine at Stony Point, NY, and later was cared for at Northern Riverview in Haverstraw in 2004. Fr. David Moreno lived with Brother Al for 12 years. He remembers Brother Al's passions: a strong prayer life; the staunch defense of human life; pride in the accomplishments of his brother Nick, a chemistry professor at Fordham University; Notre Dame football; and the Civil War. Brother Al is survived by his brother Nicholas of Red Bank, N.J., his sister Theresa Jones of Metuchen, NJ, two nephews, and a niece. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at the Marian Shrine on Saturday, February 11, at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow in the Salesian Cemetery in Goshen, NY.
