His parents were Julius F. and Hilda "Lola" Mershon Kiemsteadt. After his mother left with Avis after she claimed abuse by his father, LaVern and his siblings were brought by their father to Texas to live with Kiemsteadts. Hilda filed divorce papers in Colorado asking for custody of the girls. Subsequent papers indicate that Julius and the children could not be found, probably because they had left Oklahoma and returned to Texas. For the rest of their lives, LaVern had a strained relationship with his mother. According to US WWII Army Enlistment Records, LaVern enlisted 14 Nov 1941 in Fort Sam Houston, TX. He's buried next to his second wife, Mary Ophelia. His marker indicates he was a staff sergeant during WWII.
