LaChelle was born on July 19, 1970 to Oscar Tom Blanks and Loleta Blanks, and was the youngest of the five Blanks children Tommy, Sally, Tomalita, Stephanie & LaChelle. From her earliest years, this gift from God was doing what she did best, making other people's lives brighter. With her beautiful smile and outgoing personality, she always made you feel welcomed, accepted and loved.
LaChelle's affect on others extended far beyond her family. Attending Magnolia School from Kindergarten through twelth grade, LaChelle or Chelle as many called her, was more than a classmate. She was a friend to everyone she met. Growing up as a member of Ten Mile Baptist Center Church, LaChelle progressed from student to teacher. She joyfully participated in and led Sunday School classes, youth programs and children's groups. As her journey led her to other congregations, she continued to embody the spirit of Christ and lived by the motto---"love God, love people!"
With her natural love for children, it was no surprise that she chose education as her career, earning her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Pembroke State University and a Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Phoenix. During her 25+ years as an educator, LaChelle served in several schools including Purnell Swett, Littlefield, St. Pauls, and finally her alma mater Magnolia. She could always be counted on, not only to teach classes, but to sponsor clubs, mentor future teachers, coach the cheerleading squad and so much more. In all of these roles at all of these schools, LaChelle brought that same loving and caring spirit for others to her students and colleagues.
LaChelle's greatest joy in life was being mother to Terryn, Ryan, Kaylee and Emilee and grandmother to Ryder and Rynlee who called her Mama-Chelle. She was more than a mother and grandmother, she was their friend, their confidant, their mentor and their rock. She taught her children not just through her words, but through her actions—living a life of caring and loving others. LaChelle's love for family extended beyond her immediate family, to include her nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. Nothing made her happier than having everyone together for food, fellowship and fun!
While we are saddened by our loss, let us not be selfish. God called LaChelle home on March 9 to reward her for a life of service---a life well lived, and we must remember to be thankful that he gifted us with her for the past 51 years. So, no matter how we knew her---mother, daughter, sister, grandmother, aunt, cousin, teacher, student, colleague, mentor, or friend----because we knew her, our lives have been changed for good!
