In 1854 at age 24, James Snoddy/Snedden emigrated from Ireland aboard the ship "Cumberland" sailing from Liverpool to Philadelphia. He married Mary McAlister in 1857 in Philadelphia. They had five children, Jane/Jennie, William, Robert, Hugh and Catherine.
James enlisted in Army on June 19, 1861 in Philadelphia, PA as a 1st Sergeant. He was assigned to Company F, 69th Regiment of the Pennsylvania Infantry. The 69th Regiment fought at the Battle of Antietam on Sept. 17, 1862. However, James never made it to Antietam, but instead contracted chronic diarrhea from exposure and "the food supplied" near Richmond, Virginia in Aug 1862. He spent about two weeks in the Regimental hospital at Harrison's Landing (Berkley Plantation) and then a month at Mill Creek hospital near Fortress Monroe, Virginia. He was transferred to Bellevue Hospital in New York City on 29 Sept 1862 where he was discharged on 4 Dec 1862.
