Joan Fangman, age 88, of Carroll, died Friday, June 23, 2017 at Sunnybrook Assisted Living in Carroll, surrounded by her family.

Joan D. Fangman was born on February 9, 1929 near Duncombe, Iowa, she was the daughter of Edwin and Margaret (Peed) Mahoney.

She attended Corpus Christi Academy in Ft. Dodge, Iowa for 12 years. After her schooling at Corpus Christi, she attended the St. Joseph Mercy Hospital School of Nursing also in Ft. Dodge. She graduated with a Registered Nursing Degree, an achievement she was very proud of.

On June 20, 1953 Joan was united in marriage to Dr. Charles Fangman at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Ft. Dodge. The couple lived in Omaha, Sioux City, and Coon Rapids before moving to Carroll. While in Omaha, Joan served as a Nursing Instructor at St. Catherine's Nursing School. She took great honor in teaching and preparing the students she worked with.

Joan will be remembered for being a good wife and mother – everything or anything else was just incidental. She enjoyed being included; good company, and good conversation. Joan also enjoyed golf, reading, playing Bridge, and she loved to laugh. Most of all Joan dearly loved her grandchildren. Joan was a member of Holy Spirit Parish in Carroll.

Joan is survived by her children: Chip (Jim Neill) Fangman of Albuquerque, NM, Mary (Rod Rowland) Fangman of Audubon, Ann (Pete) Shelp of Minnetonka, MN, Matt (Donna) Fangman of Oswego, IL, Dr. Nick (Lisa) Fangman of Carroll, and Steve (Laurie) Fangman of Grimes; her grandchildren: Michael Ruggeberg, Brynne (Craig Dougary) Ruggeberg, Jordan (Zach) Grady, Tessa (Nick) Hansen, Andy (Erin) Shelp, Molly Shelp, Dr. Kate (Matt) Follese, Megan Fangman, Colin Fangman, Dr. Lauren (Dustin) Schau, Ellen (Josh) Tuel, Jon Fangman, Sam Fangman, and Sarah Fangman; a great-grandchild, Sunnie Dougary.

Also surviving is her sister Peg Moore of Marshalltown; her sisters-in-law: Vi Mahoney of Florida, and Beth (Roger) Maulik of Minnesota. Her brothers-in-law: Fr. Robert Fangman of Carroll, and Fr. James Fangman of Minnesota; as well as many wonderful nieces, and nephews.

Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Charles Fangman in 2008, her parents, her brothers, her brothers-in-law, and sisters-in-law.

A funeral mass was celebrated at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Carroll. The celebrant, Fr. Timothy Johnson. Music by Marcy Anderson with Sherry Loughran as cantor. Lectors, Molly Shelp, and Dr. Kate Follese. Gift Bearers, Megan Fangman, Colin Fangman, Dr. Lauren Schau, Ellen Tuel, Jon Fangman, Andy Shelp, Molly Shelp, Dr. Kate Follese, Sam Fangman, Sarah Fangman, Michael Ruggeberg, Brynne Ruggeberg, Jordan Grady, and Tessa Hansen. Eucharistic Minister, Lisa Fangman.

Burial at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll, Iowa.
