Hartzler, Joseph D., son of John and Magdalena (Mast) Hartzler, was born at Garden City, Mo., Oct. 19, 1884; died unexpectedly, at Winona Lake, Warsaw, Ind., Aug. 17, 1970; aged 85 y. 9 m. 29 d.

On Dec. 3, 1909, he was married to Emma Mae Schertz, who died July 6, 1962.

On Sept. 15, 1920, he was ordained minister and served the Waldo Church. On July 25, 1927, he was ordained bishop. He was moderator and member of the Executive Committee of the Illinois Conference.

Surviving are 2 daughters (Mrs. Lester Litwiller and Mrs. John Schertz), 2 sons (Paul and Floyd); 9 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, 2 sisters (Mrs. William Eigsti and Mrs. Menno King), and 2 brothers (L. J. and Ira Hartzler).

He was a member of the Waldo Church, where funeral services were held Aug. 20, with David Eshleman and Edwin Stalter officiating; interment in the Waldo Cemetery.
