Birdie Lorene Cates, 81, of Kennett, died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2005, at Pemiscot Memorial Health Systems Hospital in Hayti, Mo.
Born July 23, 1923, at Vernon, Texas, she was a daughter of the late Wiley Matthew and Minnie Mertel Gamble Downs.
On Oct. 17, 1940, she married O.O. Cates who preceded her in death April 29, 1995. She was also preceded in death by two sons, Danny Joe and Nicky Lenn Cates; two brothers, Jack and Wiley Downs; six sisters, Dorothy Lincoln, Stella and Thelma Knuckles, Bessie Moore, Ira and Grace Downs.
Survivors include two sons, Jim Tom Cates of Wentzville, Mo. and Oather Lee Cates of Deering, Mo.; two daughters, Martha Henson of O'Fallon, Mo. and Amy Miller of Wentzville, Mo.; one brother, Clifford Downs of Arnold, Mo.; two half-brothers, Virgil Knuckles of Sikeston, Mo. and Gene Knuckles of Plano, Texas; seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services are 2 p.m. today, Sunday, Jan. 23, at McDaniel Funeral Service Chapel in Kennett with the Rev. Kevin Sullivan officiating.
Burial will be in Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Kennett.
