William Atherton Place, the oldest son of Joe T. and Lena V. Place was born August 7, 1908, in the City of Chihuahua, Mexico while Joe T. was building railroads in Mexico. Bill grew up to be a hard working man. He left home at 19 years of age and got his first job working on road construction for Lee Moore Construction Company in New Mexico. He stayed with construction work all his life.
Most of the roads in New Mexico are roads he helped build, as well as quite a few in Arizona. When the first atomic bomb was built, Bill was on the job at White Sands, constructing the silo and tower for the first bomb. We had no idea where he was for a long time, because he wasn't allowed to contact anyone. He saw that first bomb exploded, but was not allowed to talk about it for years.
Bill loved to hunt and fish and took his vacations in northern New Mexico. He built a nice home in Albuquerque, where he and his wife and two sons lived. Bill loved his parents, brothers and sister and every year he came to visit them. All the little nieces and nephews loved "Uncle Bill" and he entertained them with little stories. Bill finally retired and lived out the remainder of his life in Albuquerque.
The highlight of his remaining years was the big birthday bash his children gave him on his 80th birthday. He was surely missed when he was gone, but the family has never forgotten him. (by Nancy E. Brown)

This is a "Cenotaph". His ashes were scattered where he loved to hunt in Northern New Mexico.

A Memorial stone will be placed in the Sheldon Cemetery, by his parents and brothers.
