George Burrows dies; services on Wednesday

George W. Burrows, 72, Platte Center, died unexpectedly at 7:50 a.m. today in St. Mary's hospital. He had been in failing health for some time.

Mr. Burrows, a resident of the Platte Center community nearly all his life, was town superintendent for Consumers Public Power District there for 27 years before retiring in 1854.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the McKowen Funeral Home chapel in Columbus with the Rev. D. Lee Grace officiating, and burial will be in Roselawn Memorial cemetery.

The body will lie in state at the McKown chapel after 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Mr. Burrows, born Oct. 5, 1886 in Burrows township, was one of 10 children of James and Rachael L. Wolf Burrows, Platte county homesteaders. Except for a few years at Norfolk and Jackson, Miss., his entire life was spent in the Platte Center community.

He married Lena Spuehr on Nov. 11, 1908 at Columbus, and they made their home in Platte Center. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last fall.

Active in civic affairs in Platte Center, Mr. Burrows served as town marshal from 1912 to 1913 and was a member of the Lions club and Commercial club. He was secretary of School Dist. 24 for 13 years.

An ardent sportsman, he played baseball with the local team in his younger years and also managed a girls' softball team. Hunting and fishing were his hobbies in later years.

He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Brock (Bernadette) Reynoldson of O'Neill and Mrs. Robert (Doris) Fleming of Omaha; one sister, Mrs. Ed Macken of Denver; 10 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Among the granchildren are three whom Mr. and Mrs. Burrows reared after the death of their daughter, Mrs. Ruth Van[sic] Bergen. Another daughter, Bardine, died in infancy and Mr. Burrows was also preceded in death by his brothers and sisters, Charles, Jane Godkin, Clara Ellen Burns and Ada Scheidel.
