Fred Lewis Boher, 81, of Tucson, AZ., died of heart failure Wednesday, February 8, 2017, at home with Mary Ann and members of their family at his side.
He was born January 18, 1936, in Princeton, to Fred L. Boher and Esther Viola Swanson.
He met the love of his life, Mary Ann McCormick, on January 18, 1974. Fred convinced Mary Ann and her three sons to marry him on April 5, 1974, thus becoming the father of three sons. A family needed him and he was there! Becoming a husband, father and then a Papa were the greatest joys of his too short life. In his words, "better than winning the lottery." He was a graduate of Princeton High School and Bradley University in Peoria, with post graduate work at Northern Illinois University and Western Illinois University. In Illinois, Fred taught at Ladd, DePue, Illinois; State School for Boys and Rock Falls High School. In Tucson, he taught at Tucson Unified School District. Upon retirement, he worked 10 years in administration with the Colorado Rockies baseball team during spring training in Tucson. He was a stellar athlete who excelled in both basketball and track and field. He established school records in both sports during his tenure at Princeton High School. He earned an athletic scholarship in basketball to St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa. In Illinois, he was a member of St. Louis Church, Elks Club, Bureau County Historical Society, Optimist Club, Knights of Columbus, Marching and Chowder Society. In Tucson, he was an active member of Oscher Lifelong Learning Institute. Fred supported several charities, the Sisters of Carondelet and especially Casa Maria, a soup kitchen for the needy. He was a lifelong democrat and precinct committeeman who proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era.
He is survived by his love; and their family: son and wife and two grandsons; son and wife and son (the late Julie) and two granddaughters, and great-grandson. He is also survived by a brother-in-law andhiswife. He will be missed by much loved nieces and nephews and families. He is survived by his two longtime dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Grace (Jay Wood ) and his in-laws, Paul T. and Mildred Flynn McCormick of Rock Falls; Nancy and PD Strunk of Princeton and Janice Crenshaw of Sterling. He was also preceded in death by his mentors, Father Farrell, educator, Charlie Fiocchi and coach, Don Sheffer.
During his illness he showed great courage and patience. His many friends will remember him for his unselfish and generous traits of character. Fred and Mary Ann traveled to all 50 states and many countries overseas; they were most often accompanied by a grandchild or three.
In lieu of flowers, a donation would be appreciated to: Casa Maria, 4016 E. 26th St., Tucson, AZ 85713.
Cremation was accorded by HUDGEL'S SWAN FUNERAL HOME in Tucson. Private family services will be held at a later date in Illinois.
