Gabriel Sather emigrated from Norway in 1893. He was naturalized as a U.S. citizen in 1900 and from 1908 until his death he made Petersburg, Alaska his home. He was a well-known ship captain in Alaska, serving as captain of the fishing vessel Kiseno and working for the Glacier Seafood Company at the time of his death.

Gabe Sather was married three times. His second marriage was to Frances (Hogue) Roundtree on July 3, 1922. She passed away at 47 in October of 1924. Gabe then married Ida (Creviston) Thomas on March 18, 1926.
