Shirley was born on Saturday, October 22, 1932, in Claysburg to the late Howard Jacob Black and Catherine (Ickes) Black. Shirley was the widow of John Willard Knisely, whom she married on June 12, 1951, and who died on September 21, 2021. Shirley's survivors include her son, Jeffrey "Jeff" Wayne Knisely and wife, DruAnn, of New Bloomfield; her two granddaughters: Samantha Knisely and fiancé, Eric Lenhart and Abagail Lees; and her two great-grandchildren: Aiden and Zoe Lees.

Shirley graduated from Claysburg High School. She lost her mother at an early age and became a cook, laundress and seamstress for her nine brothers and her father. She developed into an excellent cook and her husband gave her credit for his excellent health because of her outstanding cooking. Shirley was very gracious and understanding in dealing with a husband and two sons who were always hunting and fishing. Shirley retired from the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue with 28 years of service. She was also a long-time member of Eastern Star and Daughters of the Nile. Shirley and her husband of 70 years were also 60-year members of St. Paul's United Church of Christ.
