Herbert's parents were divorced when he was a young child. His father, who was a farmer, remarried. Herbert and his sister Erla, born in 1884, lived with their mother until they reached adulthood. There was also an older brother named Clyde who died as a teenager in 1891. After she grew up, Erla moved "back East" and married Nicholas Strider; they lived in Massachusetts, New York, and St. Louis, where Nicholas was an automobile dealer.

Herbert became a steamboat deckhand and longshoreman. In 1917 he was working for the F.B. Jones Transportation out of Portland. He also married Adelma the same year. They did not yet have children when he died in 1922. Herbert's mother went to live with Erla in New York about 6 years before her death in 1932. Erla also did not have children, so there were no direct descendants of Mary Ann Robinson.
