Mary came with her parents from Ohio to Yamhill County, Oregon when she was a very young child--her brother who was 3 years younger was born in Oregon. She was the second of eight children. Her father was a farmer. Mary's parents and most of her siblings remained in Oregon for the rest of their lives. Mary married John W. Fletcher , also a farmer, there in 1872. They had three children: Clyde, born in 1876 and died in 1891; Herbert, born in 1889 and died in 1922; and Erla, born in about 1884 and died in 1962 (later documents and her grave marker give Erla birth dates of 1891 and 1892, but it is clear from earlier documents that she was born in 1884 or 1885).

Mary was divorced from her husband, John W. Fletcher, in the early 1890s and did not remarry. However, John Fletcher did remarry and had several children with his second wife. Mary's surviving children lived with her until they reached adulthood. Herbert became a deckhand and longshoreman in Portland. Erla moved "back East" and married Nicholas Strider. They lived in Massachusetts, New York, and St. Louis, where Nicholas operated an automobile dealership at the time of his death.

Mary remained living in Oregon util a few years before her death, when she moved to New York to live with Erla and her husband. In 1930 she was living with them in Syracuse, NY, but died in Queens in 1932. Her death certificate indicates burial at Fresh Pond after cremation. Her obituary does not mention burial, but oddly says she died in Rhode Island, which is incorrect. ( Queens is on Long Island--maybe somebody misread or misunderstood something?) None of Mary's three children had children, so there are no direct descendants.
