He was the husband of the love of his life, Jean (Nucio) Arnold, who passed away in 2004. Joel and his wife Jean had a wonderful life traveling together especially winters in Florida.
Born in Reading, PA, he was the son of the late Joel Sr. and Agnes (Merkel) Arnold. He was a 1941 graduate of Reading High School.
He served as a Sergeant in Field Artillery Meteorology during WWII.
Joel worked in various sales positions, retiring from Tasty Baking Company after 24 years of service.
Joel was best known as the tennis legend of Berks County, having won numerous city and county championships. He played in over 500 tournaments in the US and Canada, winning over 100 tournaments.
He has 18 national rankings and was ranked as high as number six in his age division. He is a member of the Berks County Tennis Hall of Fame. He was inducted into the Berks Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame. He was awarded the Merve Heller Lifetime Achievement Award. He played his last tournament in the National Ninety and Over division at Pinehurst, North Carolina, where he reached the finals and was named the tournament sportsman of the year.
Other survivors include his beloved daughter Lesley, wife of Arthur B. White, Jr., whose love and attention filled the void left after his wife Jean passed away; grandson Arthur White III, husband of Ana, granddaughter, Jordhanna, fiancé of Joe Bell, and great-grandchildren: Marlon, Paiyten, Ryker, Donte, and JuJu.
Dad, you were a fighter and the most wonderful father a daughter could ask for. I will miss you and cherish our memories forever.
Services will be held Saturday, January 15, 2022, at 12:00 p.m. at the Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, 739 Penn Ave. West Reading, PA 19611. Burial will be private. Friends may call Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
