Obituary in The Eagle, Reading, PA, 28 Dec 1963: Joel A. Arnold Sr., of 2104 Reading Boulevard, West Wyomissing, died last night in the Reading Hospital. Before retiring last September, Arnold had been a guard at the Berks County Prison for more than 20 years. Born in Reading, he was a son of the late Joel & Catherine (Koenig) Arnold. A member of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, West Reading, & Gregg Post, American Legion, he was a veteran of World War I, service with the US Army. Arnold is survived by his widow, Agnes E. (Merkel) Arnold; a son, Joel A. Jr., of West Wyomissing; and a granddaughter; two sisters: Florence B., widow of Paul Britz of Mount Penn, and Cathryn E., wife of James Purcell of Wyomissing. Four brothers: Raymond G. of Mount Penn, William H. of Shillington, Herman A. of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and The Very Rev. Joel Arnold, OFMC, rector of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Hoboken, NJ. A High Requiem Mass will be sung on Tuesday at 9 a.m. in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, West Reading. Burial will be made in Gethsemane Cemetery. The Dougherty Funeral Home has charge.
