He owned a plumbing business in Morganton, NC. He died about a month after disolving his partnership in the business with Howard James.

His obituary appeared in the 13th September edition of the Morganton, NC News Herald:
"Death of Mr. Mortimer Rhyne"
"Mr. Mortimer Rhyne, of the firm of M. & E. Rhyne, plumbers and steam fitters, died at Grace Hospital last Sunday night, of appendicitis. Mr. Rhyne had been indisposed for a week, but his condition was not considered serious until Sunday morning, when he became violently ill and was taken to Grace Hospital for an operation. The patient continued to grow worse until he died at 9 o'clock Sunday night.
"Deceased was 35 years of age and leaves a widow and four small children. His eldest child, a daughter, now lies sick in Grace Hospital, where she has been for about two weeks. He also leaves a mother and fathe ---Mrs. and Mrs. H.M. Rhyne ---several brothers and a sister, He was a member of the Methodist church, holding his membership at Linville church, this county, and left evidence of his readiness to die. The funeral was held Monday afternoon at 4 o'clock from the Morganton church, services being conducted by Revs. W. M. Bagby, W, F, Powell and W. O. Goode, and the remains were laid to rest in Forest Hill cemetery.
The nusiness of M. & E. Rhyne will be continued unmder the smae name, for the present at least, by the deceased's brother, Mr. Ed Rhyne."
