A lifelong resident of Rhea County and of the Methodist faith, Eloise graduated from Rhea Central High School and later Tennessee Tech. She was in the first class at Bryan College in 1930. She taught school for 18 years in Panama City, Fla., and at Dayton City School and in the Rhea County School System before taking over the Reed family business until retirement in 1975, when she closed the clothing store after 105 years of business.
She belonged to the Retired Teachers Association, Dayton Garden Club for 50 years, oldest member of First United Methodist Church in Dayton, Dayton Chamber of Commerce, Rhea County Historical Society. She was featured in National Geographic, BBC, Interviewed by Peter Jennings for the Today Show on NBC, Trail of the Century/Scopes 1999, PBS channel 45 WTCI "Twelve Days in Dayton" 2001, first History Channel "Monkey Trial" 1997, Court-TV Scopes Monkey Trial 1998, American Experience Monkey Trial Headquarter 2002, second History Channel "Ten Days in Dayton" 2005, World Premier of Inherit the Wind and talked with Stanley Kramer.
She is preceded in death by her husband Donald Ferrell Reed; parents, Nicholas and Maude Buttram Purser; sisters, Marguerite West, Lucille Abernathy, Dorothy Downs, Waunita Purser; and brothers Crawford Purser and Nicholas Q. Purser.
Survivors include her daughter Donna Taylor of Dayton; son-in-law Thomas A. Taylor; grandchildren Kimberly Sue (Jeff) Boyce of Brentwood, Allen Reed (Lisa) Taylor of Lexington, S.C.; Jeffrey Thomas (Stephanie) Taylor of Dayton; great grandchildren Kayla Taylor of Dayton, Brittany Galbraith, Jordan Taylor, Lexi Taylor and Greyson Taylor of Lexington, S.C.; Connor Boyce and Glynnis Boyce of Brentwood.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church of Dayton at P.O. Box 12, Dayton, TN 37321, the Rhea County Historical and Genealogical Society, 227 Boley St., Dayton, TN 37321, and the Rhea County Education Foundation, 107 Main Street, Dayton, TN 37321.
Honorary pallbearers include members of the Dayton Garden Club and Rhea County Historical Society.
Services were held Sunday at 3 p.m. at the chapel of the Coulter Garrison Funeral Home with Rev. Clyde Fitzgerald and Rev. John Anderson officiating. Visitation was held Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m.
Interment was held at Buttram Cemetery.
