Eugene Olson, age 93, of Huron, passed away Thursday, December 30, 2021, at Avantara – Huron.

His funeral service will be at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, January 4th at the Kuhler Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted by the Huron Veterans Council.

Eugene "Gene" C. Olson was born on August 23, 1928, to Bernard and Veulah Olson, near Virgil, South Dakota. He attended grade school at Kellogg Township and Olson Country Schools graduating from Virgil High School.

Gene was united in marriage to Shirley Ochsner on March 7, 1959, making their home near and eventually in Huron. Gene and Shirley raised their three children, while establishing his own excavating business. His two boys learned the trade from Gene and began their own excavating companies following in their father's footsteps. Gene and Shirley enjoyed dancing and socializing. Gene spent some of his free time riding Harleys with his friends. He was also an avid bowler and bowled for years in league.

Gene began his first excavating company in 1950, before being drafted in to the United States Army in November of 1950. He was sent to Germany during the Korean War and spent 15 months in the service before he was honorably discharged and returned back home. Once home, Gene restarted his excavating company and spent the next 50 years in the business loving what he did. During his career, Gene owned and operated Olson Auto Sales and became a dealer for Chief Industries selling buildings and grain bins. He would also custom grind hay.

Gene will be remembered by his family and friends for his stories while in the service and his absolute love for cars. He was always tinkering and rebuilding vehicles some for his own enjoyment and others for resale. Gene was an expert on the topic of cars and loved to talk about them, as much as he did working on them.

Gene was a lifetime member of the American Legion and the VFW. He was also a proud member of the 40et8 for many, many years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Shirley; son, Scott Olson; grandson, Seth Fischer; brothers, Verne, Allen, Ellsworth, Harley, Art and Adrian; and sisters, Donna, Bernice, Beulah and Gladys.
