Born in New York City, Martha Hart was the daughter of Elijah Hart and Margaret Stanton Hart. The family moved to Chicago about 1850, where Elijah became a member of the city's first professional fire department.

She met her husband, English printer Robert V. Shurley (b. abt. 1834), while he boarded in their home. In Chicago, they had three children, Harry (b. 1858, IL), Louis (b. 1859, IL), and Winnifred (b. 1864, IL).

Robert moved his family to Iowa, first to Decorah, then to Dubuque, to pursue his career as a printer and newspaper editor. They returned to Chicago around 1890.

Her grave in the Hart plot is unmarked.
