Elijah was a volunteer firefighter in New York until he moved his family to Chicago about 1850, where he gained employment as a professional fireman with the city. After a serious injury, he was given a job with the water department of the Chicago Board of Public Works.
He died at his son Isaac's home in Pipestone, MN. His remains were returned to Chicago for interment.
His grave is unmarked, but lies next to that of his wife, Margaret Stanton Hart (1811-1887).
