Joseph's parents separated in the late 1850s and his mother remarried William Gilmer in 1860. To this couple Joseph's half-siblings were born; George in 1861, Charles in 1869 and Margaret in 1871 (died before reaching adulthood). He was counted in the 1870 census as Joseph Gilmer. From 1880 through to the final census he was counted in, 1920, he was listed as Joseph Bradshaw.
It appears Joseph Jr. never married and had no children. He was listed in censuses as a cook, first at logging camps, then by 1920 at a downtown Seattle restaurant, perhaps in the hotel where he died, which was called the Knox Hotel.
