Mal J. Harper Buried Saturday In Gardi Cemetery. Mal J. Harper, Sr., 78, died March 24th in the Wayne Memorial Hospital after a long illness. A native of Wayne County, he was a retired farmer and beekeeper. He was a member of the Wayne County Board of Education from 1938 to 1958 and a member and deacon of the Gardi Baptist Church. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Gardi Baptist Church with the Rev. Rance Richardson, pastor, the Rev. S. F. Bennett and the Rev. Baxter James officiating. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Carrie Sharpe Harper of Gardi; two daughters, Mrs. John Tyre of Gardi, and Mrs. Dennis Brown of Savannah; two sons, Mal J. Harper, Jr. of Miami, Fla., and Elwood Harper of Jesup; eight grandchildren; four sisters, Mrs. Nellie Westberry, Waycross, Mrs. Minnie Mulligan, Waycross, Mrs. Mary Harris, Jacksonville, Fla. and Mrs. Lessie Conger of Miami, Fla.; five brothers, Raymond R. Harper, Waycross, Steve Harper, Jesup, George Harper, Savannah, Nolan Harper, Jesup and Jim Harper of Lakeland, Fla. Active pallbearers were nephews William Harper, Robert Harper, Harold Harper, Lem Harper, Jr., Ralph Harris and Norman Harper. Honarary pallbearers were Mark W. Henderson, Troy Fore, L. C. Jackson, Roy Breen, C. A. Shanklin, Paul Mansfield, E. F. Mansfield, Jim Hill, Jasper Hill, Curtis Harper, Aubrey Hires, Herschel Collins and Rufus Roberson.
