John Henry "J.H." Coe, 83, heard the voice of God call him home Thursday, December 16, 2021, at 6:20 pm in the comfort of his home surrounded by his family.
J.H. was born March 28, 1938 in Covington, Tennessee (Tipton County), to loving parents, James and Bessie C. (Hall) Coe.
He was the third oldest of 10 children, including four brothers, Willie Coe (deceased), Al Joseph "Bubba" Coe (deceased), William Taylor (deceased) and Jimmy Mac Coe (deceased) and a sister, Freddie (Coe) Morris (deceased).
At an early age J.H. attended and was baptized at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Covington, Tennessee. In Covington, he attended Frazier School Dist. until he began working in the fields with his older brothers to take care of his siblings after their father's passing.
J.H. moved to Danville, Illinois. In the mid-'50s, he met the love of his life, Sandra Johnson. He and Sandra were united in Holy Matrimony on June 29, 1962, in Danville, Illinois.
J.H. was a member of Mt. Zion M.B. Church (Word of Life Love Ministries) over the last 60+ years until his health began to decline. He was an original member and a lead singer of the legendary Mt. Zion Male Chorus, a trustee, leader/mentor of the Fishers of Men men's group, and a door greeter. If nothing else, he believed in praying and paying tithes and instilled its importance in all his children and grandchildren. J.H. was a retiree of General Motors after over 30 years of service.
J.H. played baseball for Kin and Friends baseball team and was a die-hard fan of the NY Yankees and Chicago Cubs. He enjoyed watching football, the Washington Redskins. He cherished, protected, and took care of his family, loved quartet music, Sam Cooke and The Soul Stirrers, The Dixie Hummingbirds and The Mighty Clouds of Joy were a few of his all-time favorites. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, horseshoes, shooting pool and watching westerns. J.H. always had to be the "hat" when playing Monopoly with his family. He had an unmatched sense of humor, cracking jokes from the time you entered his presence until the time you left. He had sayings and many stories that we will cherish for a lifetime.

(Annie) Coe of Jackson, Tennessee and Kevin S. (Untrea) Coe of Danville, Illinois; 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; sisters, Ann Marie Smith, Jean H. Coe and Beatrice C. Cunningham, all of Danville, Illinois; a brother, George Coe of Covington, Tennessee; sisters-in-law, Dollie (Leroy) Anderson of Champaign, Illinois, Clemouth (Larry) Thomas and Ellen Johnson, both of Georgetown, Illinois; a brother-in-law, Wayne (Kim) Johnson of Danville, Illinois and a host of nieces, nephews and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter, a sister and 4 brothers.
Interment will be in Spring Hill Cemetery.
