Why she wasn't living with her father, William Henry Evans, is not known. Perhaps because her father just couldn't care for both his farm and his daughter after her mother's death, and he asked his parents to take Mattie in and care for her.
Mattie marries George Washington Orr on 14 Sep 1890.
In the 1900 Census, Mattie is shown living with her husband, George Washington Orr in Johnson County, Texas, near Rio Vista. The record shows G W to be a farmer, and lists five children, Estella, Willis, Cora, Homer, and a baby for whom they had not yet picked a name, so that is blank on the record...he was later named George Larkin.
By the time of the 1910 Census, she and her husband have moved to Castro County, Texas, where her husband is still listed as a farmer. On this record there are two additional children listed, Rupert and Clara Marie. Also living with them is Mattie's grandmother, Mariah Catherine Evans.
Sometime between 1910 and 1920 Mattie's mother must have passed away as no further record of her is found in the census.
In the 1920 Federal Census, the family is shown to have moved to Mobeetie, Wheeler, Texas. All of their children are still with them, and included in their home is a man named Nathan R Wright, who is listed as an invalid.
By 1930, only Rupert and Clara Marie are still living with their parents in the Orr home in Mobeetie, Texas. George W Orr is here listed as the Assessor & Collector of Taxes for the Mobeetie Independent School District.
After her husband's passing in 1937, Mattie moved to Pampa, Gray, Texas to live with one of her children. Her death certificate reflects that cause of her death, basically, as kidney failure.
