LADY DROPPED DEAD
Mrs. Hsrriet Holmes engaged in housework when summoned.
Mrs. Harriet Holmes dropped dead this morning about 10 o'clock while engaged in housework duties in the kitchen at the home of her brother-in-law, Bernard V. Forshee, 809 South Fifth Street.
Mrs. Holmes and her niece, Miss Ada Corey, who with her sister, Hattie, also makes her home with her grandfather, Mr. Forshee, were doing the morning work when Miss Corey left the room for a few minutes. From the adjoining room she heard her aunt speak, and then almost immediately heard her fall. Miss Core after y ran to the kitchen to find her aunt's apparently lifeless body on the floor.
Restoratives were applied by Miss Corey and the neighbors who responded to her call for assistance, but without effect. Dr. Ullrey, who was summoned attributed her death to heart disease from which she has long been a sufferer.
Mrs. Holmes was 71 years of age. She was born in Ohio. She came to Niles three years ago, after the death of Mrs. Forshee, to keep house for her brother-in-law and his grandchildren.
The remains will be taken to Lansing where her two step-sons reside, for burial.

The State of Michigan, Berrien County, Death Record page 242 records Harriet's death as a single entry which the library sent on three copy pages as follows:
Record Number - 148
Date May 4, 1910
Full Name - Holmes, Harriet C.
Female
White
Widow
Age - 71 years, 4 months, 19 days
Place of Death - Niles
Cause of Death - Organic Disease
Birthplace - Ohio
Parents Name - David Easterly, Elizabeth Halstead
Parents Residence - N. Y.
Date of Record - July 6, 1919
In the 1870 census Harriet was listed in the household of Philander and Martha H. (for Halstead) Gregory in Unadilla Township, Livingston County, Michigan. Her occupation was housekeeper. In the 1880 census Harriet was in the same household and her relationship to the Gregorys was niece. Martha Halstead Gregory and Harriet's mother, Elizabeth Halstead Easterly were sisters.
Between 1880 and 1900, Harriet married a man named Holmes and was widowed. She is listed in the 1900 census as Hattie Holmes, in the household of D. Bird and Hattie E. Gregory. Also in the household are Martha A. Gregory, grandmother, and Hattie Holmes, boarder. They lived in Unadilla Township. Harriet, now called Hattie, likely returned to the Gregory household after her husband's death because of her long association with the family, her blood relationship, and the possible need for someone to help care for the elderly Martha.
When the census enumerator called at the Bernard V. Forshee residence in Niles, Michigan, in April 1910, Hattie Holmes was there. Her sister Louisa Easterly Forshee had died in 1907.
The above information was originally found by Len Corey (now deceased), and shared with Susan Hopkins (48194321), whose husband's paternal line descends from Jane Ursula Easterly. Harriet was a sister of Len's great grandmother.
