Thomas was the son of John and Catharine (Schmidt) Klassen, both natives of Germany. Thomas attended school in Illinois and moved to Nebraska as a young man. He married Miss Annie Gilsdorf on 19 Oct 1886. Annie was the daughter of Matthias and Elizabeth (Hassling) Gilsdorf, both natives of Germany as well.
