John was one of five sons of George and Isabella Boyd and he was most likely born in Ireland. The family moved to Pennsylvania near the Chester County/Lancaster County line. In the 1730s, John and three brothers moved to the Dan River Region of Brunswick County, later which became Lunenburg County, and later Halifax County. John married Margaret Lawson and he established a ferry over the Dan River in 1752. John died by drowning in Lawsons Creek.
